Start Hockey exists because someone has to explain this sport in plain language, and that someone doesn’t have to be just one person. If you’ve got real experience, whether that’s playing, coaching, refereeing, or just being the parent who finally figured out how all of this works, there’s a place for your writing here.
- This isn’t a paid position. What you get instead is a real byline, a short bio, and links to your own site, blog, YouTube channel, or social profiles on every piece you write.
- You can write a brand-new guide, or improve one that’s already published.
- No huge time commitment required, one solid guide is enough to get started.
What we’re looking for
Anything that helps someone who feels lost at the rink. That includes:
Good fits
- Guides for new players, new parents, or new fans
- Gear breakdowns based on things you’ve actually used
- Glossary terms explained the way you’d explain them to a friend
- Corrections, updates, or improvements to an existing guide
Not a good fit
- Promotional posts for a product or business, disguised as a guide
- Content copied or lightly reworded from another site
- Anything you can’t personally vouch for as accurate
What you get in return
No payment, we want to be upfront about that from the start. What you get instead is real, permanent credit: your name on the piece, a short bio underneath it, and links out to your own website, blog, YouTube channel, or social accounts. If you’re trying to build an audience, a portfolio, or just get your name attached to something useful, this is a straightforward way to do it without needing your own site to already have traffic.
How to pitch or contribute
Send a short email to contribute@starthockey.com with:
- What you’d like to write about, or which existing guide you’d like to improve
- A sentence or two about your hockey background, playing, coaching, parenting, whatever gives you a real angle
- Links to anything you’d want credited alongside your byline
If it’s a fit, we’ll work with you on getting it published, and you’ll keep the byline and links on the piece for as long as it’s live.
You don’t need to be a professional writer
Plain, honest, and clear beats polished every time on this site. If you can explain something to a confused friend at the rink, you can write a guide for us.
